Our Leading Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Number One Position.

At first glance, this work may look more like a challenging academic challenge rather than a new pop project by an artist who just had a last hit featured an international pop star. Broken into four different sections and performed in thirteen tongues, we have a dizzying classical-tinged opus exploring female mystery, religious ascent, and corporal transformation, frequently via the lens of different saintly figures. The end of a romance—a theme treated with grounded openness elsewhere—soars heavenward here, carried by the lush presence of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among a long list of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself renders the efforts of other pop stars seem rather laughable.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to escape overly intellectual posturing is nothing short of miraculous, with complete praise belonging to Rosalía. While this is not the first time project to blend historical sounds with modern styles, its scale feel much greater here, with the balancing act far more precarious. The element that truly raises this fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, dense compositions, and inherent drama, is an essential spirit of playfulness. Much like the iconic artist during her peak, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. When she's tearing your heart apart, you nevertheless want to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That exuberant energy comes forth clearly on a stirring piano-led ballad about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for several minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated string surge thuds down like cartoonish force. The song then shifts to the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux lies in the listener rarely quite understand—or even want to predict—what it is going to next."

Nearly each track ends in a totally different place from how it began. One moment explores the fleeting nature of celebrity over a delicate symphony before disintegrating into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing her previous trap-infused work begins off dark and brooding, with prowling vocals, before sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic choir arrive to soften its rough corners.

The Bridge Between Art and Pop

A key balancing act on the album involves navigating the gap of bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that it has become her first work to break into the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy pop songs. A song performed primarily in the English language swells around a refrain that seems to collect more and more nagging melodies as it spirals skyward. This trick is repeated on a different expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving layered tunes as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting a former partner described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album is popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, crafting a dramatic spectacle that skillfully manages its built-in excess. It is a deep source of hidden gems that requires patience to completely mine but never feels like a chore. Where some big pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, Lux is a lavish banquet at which the characters at it, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common gossip about useless men. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's most endlessly inventive visionary.
